The right fabric makes more difference in a Pakistani summer than almost anything else you wear. Here is a quick guide to the three fabrics you will see most at Giraah: lawn, cotton and grip, and when each one works best.
The quick answer
| Fabric | How it feels | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Lawn | Very light, soft and breathable | Peak summer heat, daily wear |
| Cotton | Denser, with more structure | Warm days, office wear, early and late summer |
| Grip | Smooth with a soft drape, resists creasing | Mid-season, skirts, maxis and modern cuts |
Lawn: the summer staple
Lawn is a fine, lightweight cotton fabric with a plain weave. It lets air through and dries quickly, which is why it is the go-to fabric for Pakistan's hottest months. Lawn also takes prints beautifully, from florals to bold colour.
You will find a few varieties at Giraah:
- Doria lawn has fine woven stripes that add texture and airflow, as in our blue doria lawn frock.
- Self-embossed lawn has a raised pattern woven in, so it looks rich while staying light. See our co-ord sets.
- Printed lawn is the classic for 2-piece suits, like our blue floral long shirt and trouser.

Cotton: structure and everyday comfort
Cotton suits are denser than lawn, so they hold their shape well and feel a little more polished. They are comfortable on warm days and practical for the office, and they suit the start and end of summer when evenings get cooler. Try our black cotton shalwar qameez with gota or the navy blue cotton 3-piece.
Grip: easy drape for modern styles
Grip is a smooth, soft fabric with a fluid drape. It resists creasing and keeps its shape through the day, which makes it ideal for skirts, maxis and Western-inspired cuts. It is less airy than lawn, so it is best for mid-season weather or air-conditioned days rather than peak heat. See our floral maxi with textured jacket and skirt and shirt sets.
How to choose
- Hottest days, outdoors: lawn.
- Office or a smarter everyday look: cotton.
- Mid-season, travel or a modern silhouette: grip.
- Dawats and Eid in summer: chikankari on a light base, or lawn with gota details.
Fabric care in summer
Wash lawn and cotton in cold water with a mild detergent, wash dark colours separately the first few times, and dry in the shade to keep colours bright. Grip can usually go in a gentle machine wash and needs only a low iron. For pieces with gota or embroidery, dry cleaning is safest. See our FAQ for more.
